Jonan menuturkan, aturan tersebut bertujuan agar biaya produksi listrik di dalam negeri bisa kompetitif, sehingga harga listrik bisa terjangkau bagi konsumen. Selain itu, dengan membuka keran impor LNG, maka harga gas di dalam negeri juga bisa bersaing dengan pasar internasional. Ini (ketentuan) adil untuk masyarakat," jelas Jonan.
Dengan begitu, PLN atau IPP bisa mengimpor LNG selama harga LNG di luar negeri lebih murah ketimbang harga LNG yang dijual di dalam negeri. Sampai saat ini, Jonan baru bisa memastikan regulasi impor LNG untuk kebutuhan pembangkit listrik. Adapun ketentuan atau aturan impor LNG untuk kebutuhan pelaku industri di dalam negeri, hingga saat ini pemerintah belum mempersiapkannya. Jonan beralasan, khusus untuk regulasi impor LNG untuk kebutuhan industri manufaktur, kewenangannya ada di Kantor Kementerian Koordinator Bidang Perekonomian. Sebab, ketentuan impor LNG untuk industri tersebut terkait dengan kebijakan pemerintah yang memberikan diskon harga gas ke pelaku industri.
Sebagaimana diketahui, dari tujuh industri yang dijanjikan pemerintah mendapatkan diskon harga gas, baru tiga sektor industri yang menikmatinya.
